It is easy for a college town bar and club to get in the way of a student's studies. The main reason we all go to college is to learn, but sometimes we get sidetracked or procrastinate or just get straight up lazy and decide to do something fun. There is absolutely no one in the world to stop a college student that does not live close to home from making the mistake of going out when they should be studying. With Facebook pages, Party tutor, and other websites that purely give information on partying in college towns, it is a lot harder to stay focused on school than ever. The Standard bar and club does not care whether or not you study, or if you finished all your work before coming out to party, what they care about is whether or not you come to their party that night and how many drinks you're buying. The reason The Standard and other places are so effective in bringing kids into their bars when they should be doing school work is the student's fear of missing out (FOMO) on something cool. the Standard is well known in Tallahassee for their 90s night on Saturdays. It is no secret that almost every freshman in summer c who enjoy going out have fought about going to this event. I, personally have gone to this event several times instead of doing required work that I should have stayed home and done. But the opinions of the people of Tallahassee say that this event is COOL, and freshman like me are all lining up to be a part of something cool, that is the one thing that appeals to people like us the most.
For a college student to say that this video is not really really cool, is rare. Guys my age fantasize about being able to attract all the attention is a place by having the attention of almost anyone in a bar or club because a sparkling bottle of champagne or whatever it is is moving towards you and your group of friends. These are dreams rooted in old music videos that told us that buying that kind of attention is definitely cool. That the kind of music playing in the video is something that we should listen to because its on the up and up. Popular culture does not make it hard for bars and clubs to show a crowd of young people a good time because of what is popular in the country at an point in time. The videos and pictures that The Standard posted on their pages of contact that show people having a good time is everything a college student wants, whether the student is a new freshman or a soon-to-finish senior that only needs a few credits to graduate.
The Standard does not have its own proper website. Instead, it has subdomains on many websites to display its information in many different areas. I believe this is an advantage because it allows for the bar/club to be found in many more places thus adding to the probability that a person looking into the nightlife of Tallahassee online will see The Standard. I, personally would never look on a bar’s website before going, no one does that, instead I would maybe check out the Facebook page and look for a personal review from friends either in person or over another social media. The Standard is present on websites when you look up Tallahassee nightlife, as it is a very popular venue for college students. Again, having a personal website would not be effective for The Standard, but being more effective on other media systems would greatly help the cause and connect with more people that want to party.
Although it does not have an Instagram account, pictures from The Standard could be seen on the popular app/website using hashtags made popular by The Standard. This is a purely free and effective way to advertise a business on social media. I consider the Standard to be at a disadvantage by not having an Instagram, which uses mostly pictures with captions, because the one thing people who want to check out a bar want to see is how it looks before they even go. Having an Instagram, in my opinion, would work to the benefit of the company and would probably never hurt the business, not even financially because of the ability to open an account for free. Advertising with pictures on an account on Instagram would definitely cater to the college environment by showing them the space of The Standard and allowing more and more people to know what The Standard is. When more people see a business, the more people use the business or at least try it, especially something as in demand as a party. When something is in demand, it is the job of the business to effectively display the information that the customers need in order to buy the product or service. As far as the instagram goes, it would be effective for The Standard to post the pictures of people having fun on an instagram account. This would promote the environment of cool and would cater to the idea that The Standard sets the standard for the “good night” in Tallahassee. Instagram is very cool at the moment, a you will find that most of your friends have them and post regularly. Instagram could be a helpful tool for The Standard if they noticed how cool it is using pictures, short videos, and even putting its posters on instagram.
Another disadvantage of not taking advantage of these social media platforms is that the business runs the risk of not connecting with people like me, young college students. If The Standard offered exclusive deals for following their account on Twitter and frequently updated that account, then I believe their business would improve. Keeping up with technology is not a very hard thing to do. They could hire basically anyone to update their media to advertise their bar. My own personal judgment and experience with Twitter over the last few years has shown me that a lot more businesses are starting to use Twitter to market their products with the age group of high school to college students. Back home in South Florida, Twitter was the main social media used by the students around my age. Local businesses were exploding onto the Twitter scene by offering great deals for following and “re-tweeting” tweets published by the business. A business that had usually advertised in an ineffective newsletter for the town at a high price was now advertising for free using Twitter as its main source with an account. Twitter is another thing that is very cool in today's world. Twitter is used by businesses and regular people alike, especially young people. Because it is impractical for a bar or club to have a tv commercial, the next best thing the bar or club can do is use twitter. It is easy to use and popular, the two reasons why so many college students use it.
